Katherine Johnson (Coleman) grew up in West Virginia, USA. She always had a huge thirst for knowledge and an extraordinary talent for numbers. A child prodigy, Catherine entered high school at the age of 10 and graduated from college when she was only eighteen. In 1953, she joined a group of women hired by NASA as a human-computer. Catherine calculated the trajectory of NASA's first American flight into space. Their flawless calculations ensure that the Apollo astronauts can safely land and return from their trip to the moon. Catherine's numbers were so consistent that when NASA switched to mechanical computers, Catherine had the accuracy of a calculator's results.
Pioneering achievements, barriers of race and gender are celebrated with Barbie Inspiring Women "Katherine Johnson". Like the trajectory they are charting, Catherine's accomplishments inspire young people to excel in math and science and reach for the stars. read more
