Barbie Sally Ride, Inspiring Women

Sally's love of learning and science led her to study physics in college. While completing her doctorate, Sally reacted to an article in the student newspaper announcing that NASA was recruiting for the first time female astronauts. Out of more than 8,000 applicants, she was one of six women accepted into the program. On June 18, 1983, Sally Ride lifted off aboard the space shuttle Challenger, becoming the first American woman—and the youngest American woman—to fly into space.
