Four of Barbie's best friends are celebrating anniversaries this year. Christy, the first unique black doll, is released by Mattel and is the first to celebrate its 55th anniversary.
A little history
The first doll was sold in 1968 in parallel with another friend of Barbie - Stacey. Christy is one of Barbie's longest-running black friends. Her doll was 29 cm. Talking Christy doll had short curly brown hair, brown eyes and eyelash extensions.
There were no new Christie dolls for several years in the 1980s, but there were a few other black friends: Dee Dee (The Rocker's) and Belinda (The Sensations). In 1988, Christy came to sunny California with a completely new face and settled there forever.
In Europe, only dolls in swimsuits were sold. This changed only in 2000.
Since her debut in 1968, Christy has had 10 different faces.
Christy debuted in 1968 and quickly became one of Barbie's top favorites. To celebrate her 55th birthday, one of her 1960s beach looks has been reinterpreted with modern details. Christy turns heads at a glamorous pool party in a bright orange dress paired with a sheer overlay in a trendy print. Orange strappy boots, gold rings and a monogram C necklace complete her floor-sweeping look. Lavish curls swept back from her face show off coral-toned makeup reminiscent of the original doll.
