Disney is celebrating its 100th anniversary with unparalleled content, experiences and collections. That's exactly what the new set Disney100: Darkness Descends Series - Maleficent Doll is. This iconic event, like the doll, celebrates the storytellers, fans and families who together create the wonder and magic of Disney.
Since the 1959 Disney classic Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent has become one of Disney's most beloved villains. This special collector's edition depicts her dramatic transformation from sinister fairy to fearless fire-breathing dragon.
Bringing fire
There's no doubt that the design team set out to create the most adorable version of Maleficent you've ever seen. The result reflects both a sinister fairy and a fire-breathing dragon as elements of her evil essence.
The dragon is in the details
Maleficent's iridescent wings have surprisingly intricate scales similar to the one embossed on her purple vinyl dress. And she is standing on high heels with fierce dragon claws.
Maleficent's outfit is amazing, as is she herself:
Charmeuse sleeves cut in the form of tongues of flame, with an ascending ombre flame print, layered chiffon in transitional green tones with flame edges also gives an ombre effect. Dragon scale embossing on a purple vinyl dress, iridescent wings brilliantly accent the dragon scale details. A transparent green-to-green transition effect on her legs depicts her engulfed in flames, while glowing green heels with dragon claws accentuate her transformation.
The set includes a staff and a favorite crow turned into stone, as well as a unique stand for a doll in the form of a flame.
Meet the designer Karina Bilts
"This is our first fear-inspiring villain doll to celebrate Disney's 100 Years of Wonder."
Lead product designer Karina Biltz led the team that created this adorable doll. She allowed us to see behind the scenes of their creative process.
"When I was growing up, I watched all the Disney princess movies, and this movie definitely left an impression on me. I've always loved the animation style and the true darkness that Maleficent brings to life. The Disney Princess characters burned into my heart as a child, but, as an adult, I realized that villains get the best costumes!"
"Rewatching the original animated film, I was struck by her almost cold tone and manner of speaking, and how it contrasted with the power and anger she conveys in the scene where she transforms into a dragon form. For me, this is the most striking moment of the villain" - says Karina.
"I really wanted to convey movement with the soft chiffon and charmeuse at the bottom of the dress to make her look like she was on fire. The vinyl at the top represents the tough, scaly texture of her new dragon skin. The two fabrics mix and contrast to show the transition she's going through."
"I love her transparent green legs that make it look like she's disappearing into flames, her pointy boots with dragon claws, and our ode to her favorite accomplice, the Raven Diablo, who is frozen in stone on her staff."
Maleficent is depicted in the process of transformation - and Prince Philip should heed her warning, because Maleficent will not give up without a fierce battle.
